Smallbrook FC travelled to Aldersley Leisure Centre in Wolverhampton on Wednesday 31st January to play their second game of our league season. Smallbrook were looking to bounce back from their encouraging defeat last time out where we lost a narrow game against Queenswood United at Ludlow Stadium. Buoyed by a 13 player squad, Smallbrook FC were in good spirits on the journey, coaches Jamie and Lauren really positive that we could achieve the result we had been waiting for the last 18 months.
The omens were looking positive when Woodbury, who only had 8 players for an 8v8 match, lost a player before we even kicked off. The game started off at a frantic pace but it was all one way, Smallbrook FC were on top and the Woodbury goalkeeper was having the game of his life, chance after chance went by but Smallbrook FC just couldn’t find the goal they so desperately wanted. 15 minutes in Smallbrook FC launched a quick attack and got the ball to the feet of Devon who beat two players with his tricky feet and finished past the goalkeeper to put us 1-0 up. The goal seemed to give Smallbrook a real air of confidence, Jayden hit a rocket from 20 yards that was going top bins but the keeper managed to pull off a great save, Leon and Alfie looked really solid at the back, Leon making his debut and performed brilliantly in tandem with Alfie. There was also a debut on the right hand side for Louie who was solid and worked hard in his defensive and attacking duties. Devon managed to utilise his quick feet again to positive effect by scoring a further two goals just before half time. A well deserved hat-trick for Devon.
Smallbrook rang the changes at half time but kept the spine of the team intact, Alfie at Centre Back and Jayden at CDM. Harvey, Rio, Kobie and Ben came on in the second half and all performed really well, helping Rio to score 2 goals in a shortened second half, giving Smallbrook chance to rotate the team and give everyone some good playing time. The referee blew the full time whistle to much cheers and celebration by a Smallbrook team that achieved their first ever victory, players and coaches alike were jubilant whilst also respectful of our opposition who gave us a good game.
Player of the Match: Everyone – our first win, a great team effort where everyone tried the hardest and performed well.
Next game: Queensway away on Friday 23rd February
