6th February 2024

CHINESE NEW YEAR

This week Smallbrook celebrated Chinese New Year!

Chinese New Year, or Lunar New Year, is an important celebration in many parts of Asia. During the celebrations, people will use red to decorate, symbolizing good luck and happiness. The New Year celebration is centred around removing the bad and the old and welcoming the new and the good. It’s a time to worship ancestors, exorcise evil spirits and pray for good harvest.

Students were able to delve into the history behind the many cultural traditions linked to this exciting time of year. They had the chance to experience traditional Chinese food, learn about the different Chinese symbols linked to each year and take part in a variety of activities, which included traditional ribbon dancing, and participate on the famous dragon dance, which is performed during festivals and celebrations to drive evil spirits away and usher good luck and blessings to the community.

Everyone had an amazing time, thank you to all involved and for Vanessa for arranging such a magical day.
