Home News & Events Eco School aiming for green flag
Student council and eco school restructured the council this autumn. Council roles have been assigned for each council member, with each assigned a vice who will role support and stand in during member absences. Council meetings now involve all members from both houses with an eco-school strand. An Eco school coordinator has been assigned specifically for eco-school projects and initiatives.
Through council efforts, the school now has a large poly-tunnel to be erected in February. The council and eco coordinators are looking at ways of powering the tunnel in a sustainable renewable way, solar panels are looking favourable. Horticulture will be delivered across the key stages, with own grown fruit and veg produced by pupils. Land utility is to be expanded – suggestions so far are a small number of livestock for animal husbandry and therapeutic aims; widening of the popular wild meadow area; tree and other shrub planting.
Student council and eco school are aiming for green flag status this year. One hundred points are required. The school is halfway to date, with additional points awarded following a ‘Greenday’ in November that was enjoyed by the whole school. Smallbrook Greenday coincided with the COP26 summit. Pupils and staff wore green and worked on environmental projects and activities during the day. Posters and letters to heads of state were written, raising awareness and seeking answers to crucial questions. Some year 9 pupils designed and made a balloon powered model prototype vehicle from 100% recycled resources (balloon not withstanding). They were delighted with a successful maiden journey of one metre!
Councillors have proposed and are planning a school uniform upgrade that will incorporate a badge system for head of house, prefect, etc. Points systems continue to be in place and refined. Both Omega and Alpha are at capacity with all pupils displaying healthy competition. Prizes have been awarded for points awarded for good behaviour and school work, peer on peer support and anti-bullying leadership. Amazing passion and vision from head of eco school, Antony Shaw; Well done guys!
